The Gospel of Luke – The Rejected Saviour

luke_banner_small
Scripture: Luke 4:14-30 | Speaker: Josh Tong | Date: April 30, 2017

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.” This is what the prophet Isaiah wrote about the Messiah 700 years before Jesus’ ministry on earth. In this sermon, Pastor Josh shows us that Jesus claimed to be the Messiah, the Anointed One who was sent by God to save his people. And just as Isaiah predicted, Jesus was despised, rejected, and nearly murdered, not because he claimed to be the Messiah, but because of what he had come to do as the Messiah.

Easter Sunday: Born Again To A Living Hope – 1 Peter 1:3-4

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3-4 | Speaker: Josh Tong | Date: April 16, 2017

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was the most important event in the history of the world. It revealed Jesus as the true Son of God, and it displayed his definitive victory over Sin, Satan, and Death. And now, because of the resurrection, all who trust in Jesus can have something that has been described as “the only thing between man and the abyss”: hope. We can have a living hope in a living Saviour, for Christ has conquered all. In this sermon, Pastor Josh helps us understand the nature of hope, and what it is about the resurrection that gives believers a “living hope”.

Looking To Jesus (A Good Friday Sermon)

Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-2 | Speaker: Josh Tong | Date: April 14, 2017

Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ suffered and died for sinners all over the world. Now, Jesus calls us to put our trust in him, in order that we may be forgiven of our sin and brought back into a joyful relationship with God. But as German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.” In this Good Friday sermon, Pastor Josh reminds us that trusting Jesus means following him on the path of suffering. It is a journey that would be impossible for us to complete by ourselves. But with Jesus as our sustainer, and Jesus as our ultimate prize, we can be confident that we will finish it.

Scripture: Luke 3:1-20 | Speaker: Josh Tong | Date: April 2, 2017

Who was John the Baptist, and what was his message? Jesus called John the Baptist the greatest man who ever lived. The reason why he was a great man was because he brought a great message: “Prepare for the Lord by preparing your life!” John was called by God to call people to repentance, so that they would be ready for God’s imminent judgment. In this sermon, Pastor Josh explains John the Baptist’s call to repent, and why it matters for us today.

The Gospel of Luke – Three Portraits of Jesus

luke_banner_small
Scripture: Luke 2:22-52 | Speaker: Josh Tong | Date: March 26, 2017

Our culture thinks it has Jesus figured out. It says that Jesus was merely a man who started a new religion centered around ethical teaching. That caricature of Jesus isn’t too difficult for our culture to tolerate. The Jesus portrayed in the Bible, however, couldn’t be more different. In this sermon, Pastor Josh shows us the true nature of Jesus’ work and identity as described in Luke Chapter 2, and he calls us not just to follow Jesus, but to worship him.

The Gospel of Luke – God’s Mercy For All Who Trust Him

luke_banner_small
Scripture: Luke 1:57-80 | Speaker: Josh Tong | Date: Mar 12, 2017

We live in a culture characterized by promises that are either half-kept or not-kept. Promises as routine as those we make to our kids to spend time with them, to promises as sacred as marriage, are routinely dishonoured and discarded. In this sermon, Pastor Josh shows us how God, through the person and work of Jesus Christ, shows himself to be perfectly faithful in keeping his promises, whether they are promises made to us now, or promises made to his people thousands of years ago.

The Gospel of Luke – God’s Grace For A Teenage Girl

luke_banner_small
Scripture: Luke 1:26-56 | Speaker: Josh Tong | Date: Feb 26, 2017

Are you a person of faith, who at the same time struggles with deep uncertainty? We often assume that uncertainty means the absence of faith. But is that true? In this sermon about Mary, a teenage girl who would be chosen by God both to carry the Saviour of the world in her womb and to be an example of faith to generations of believers, Pastor Josh teaches us that Mary demonstrates how a particular kind of uncertainty can in fact be consistent with faith.
