Our History

Sovereign Grace Church Toronto began with a prayer meeting of 5 people who were seeking God’s will for their life. They were a group that was longing to be part of a church that would encourage and build families and young people, and would make a difference in the way people lived out their faith. This took place in the summer of 2004. During that prayer meeting the promise from Matthew 16:18 became the hope that gave the group faith to plant a new church for God’s glory.

Many years earlier (in 1989), Tim Kerr had been commissioned as a church planter by the elders of his home church in downtown Toronto. From there Tim & his family had been involved in church planting in Japan for many years. Ever since returning from Japan, Tim had been praying about an opportunity to plant another church and this prayer meeting confirmed that God was now opening a door for a new church to be started. The next week this small group starting meeting in the Kerr’s living room for prayer, singing, studying the Bible, and discussing how to live the truths they were learning.

Soon after, Tim & Joanne and family moved for a year down to Gaithersburg, Maryland so Tim could study at the Sovereign Grace Ministries Pastors College.

As God continued to lead more families to the church, a move from the living room became necessary. The group moved to a community center close by, to a school in Vaughan (the north end of Toronto), and then to the present location in King City (a suburb of Toronto).

Sovereign Grace Church Toronto is a member of a growing movement of churches called Sovereign Grace Ministries and enjoys rich relationships and oversight from the Sovereign Grace Ministries leadership team.
