When we present the gospel and are rejected, we are tempted to give up or water down the message. We emphasize the benefits of Christianity rather than the responsibilities, the gains rather than the losses. Why do we do that? We do that because we lose confidence in the power of the message we proclaim and in the infinite worth of Jesus Christ. In this sermon, Pastor Josh shows us how Jesus responded to rejection. Unlike us, he never stopped calling others to follow him, and unlike us, he never failed to warn those who would follow him of the radically high cost of doing so.

It can be easy to read through the Gospels and laugh at some of the silly things Jesus’ first disciples said and did. They doubted the power of God even though they were eyewitnesses to Jesus’ miracles. They argued back and forth about which of them was the greatest when they stood in the presence of the Greatest One. We think, “How weak they were, and how vain!”, — and they were — but we forget that we are just as weak, and just as vain. In this sermon, Pastor Josh reminds us that Jesus’ correction of his first followers remains just as relevant now as it was then, and he shows us how our Saviour’s correction applies to believers living in the 21st century.

The central question of the Gospel of Luke is, “Who is Jesus?” Up to this point in the Gospel, people have come up with all sorts of answers. Some said he was an ancient prophet. Others said he was a heretic who needed to be eliminated. Finally, in Chapter 9, Jesus himself answers the question, first with words, then with a display of his true glory. In this sermon, Pastor Josh teaches us about the significance of Jesus’ Transfiguration and shows us that, if we are to deny ourselves, take up our crosses daily, and follow Jesus, we need to know him as he truly is: the glorious, majestic, and powerful Son of God.
